Exercising Can Feel Like A Drag… Who has fun while working out?
“UGH, I have to work out after work. I would rather just go home.”
“I wish I could do Taco Tuesday but I really should just go do the stupid Stairmaster”
“Working out just sucks. I wish I didn’t have to do it.”
Do any of these sound familiar to you? More importantly, have any of these sentences come out of your very own mouth? If you’re like most people, your answers to those questions were “yes and yes.” Many people consider “working out” a chore or an undesired task. It’s just another thing on the checklist that needs to get done. Often times people will do their workout right when they wake up just to “get it out of the way.” If it isn’t done in the morning, you’ll dread it for the rest of the day and by the time 5:30 comes around you just want to sit on the couch to “Netflix and Chill.”
Overcome the Workout Excuses with More Joy!
There is nothing wrong with making your workout a part of your to-do list or just getting it out of the way in the morning. Physical activity, as you know, can greatly improve health. In fact, it’s one of the key components in our individualized weight loss plans. The problem is getting the motivation to get that activity done. Many of us struggle to get there. Going to the gym doesn’t exactly sound like a jolly time after or before a 10-hour workday.
Common Workout Excuses
The most popular excuse for skipping a workout is either low energy or low motivation (or both). It’s not too motivating to ponder on how much we hate working out and then proceed to get that workout done later in the day. The biggest problem for most seems to be the motivational component. What are some ways that we can increase this motivation and increase the chances of getting the workout done?
Change Your Exercise Mindset
Interestingly, research shows that a person’s mindset on their physical activity plays a significant role in the amount he/she works out and one’s adherence to a workout program. This is why HLMD has team members that work with your mindset and emotions on working out and eating right. In other words, you are much more likely to stick to your workout regime if you are having fun while you are moving. This looks different for every single person. Some people may absolutely love yoga while others prefer an outdoor hike. Some people like to get a sweat going with friends and others prefer the serenity of being alone. A fun workout is essential to sticking with your workout routine!

“Exercise” Vs. “Movement”
Something else that typically helps people overcome this negative attitude towards working out is using the term “movement” in replace of “exercise.” Many of us (not all, but many) have countless negative connotations with “exercise.” Instead of focusing on getting “your workout in”, just think about how you can increase the movement of your body throughout the day. This could include doing one of the fun activities mentioned above… or it could be things that you do during your workday.
Get More Activity During the Work Day:
- Bring resistance bands to the office and do a couple of exercises when you are feeling a little sluggish to wake yourself up again
- Use a standing desk- stand every other hour while working
- Take a short walk during your lunch break
- Take the Stairs everyday
- Walking meeting with co-workers
- Get up and move around at least once every hour.
